What is NeoLife Kal-Mag Plus D?
A mineral supplement combining calcium, magnesium and vitamin D3 — the three nutrients most associated with bone health — in one tablet. It is 180 tablets, taken three a day, so a bottle is a two-month supply and, at 37p a day, one of the better-value products in the range.
The three are paired deliberately: calcium and magnesium both contribute to the maintenance of normal bones, and vitamin D contributes to the normal absorption and utilisation of calcium. The authorised claims are set out below.
What is in each daily serving
From the UK nutrition information on the pack. These amounts are per three tablets — the recommended daily intake.
| Per 3 tablets | Amount | %NRV |
|---|---|---|
| Calcium | 450 mg1 | 56% |
| Magnesium | 225 mg1 | 60% |
| Vitamin D3 | 5 µg1 | 100% |
The calcium-to-magnesium ratio is 2:1, and the vitamin D is at 100% of the reference intake per serving. The minerals come from calcium carbonate and magnesium hydroxide.
What these nutrients are authorised to do
This is a product where the claims are well supported. All three nutrients meet the threshold for their authorised GB claims. In their permitted wording:
- Calcium and magnesium are both needed for the maintenance of normal bones and teeth.
- Vitamin D contributes to the normal absorption and utilisation of calcium, and to the maintenance of normal bones, teeth and muscle function.
- Calcium contributes to normal muscle function, normal neurotransmission, normal energy-yielding metabolism and the normal function of digestive enzymes.
- Magnesium contributes to normal muscle function, the normal functioning of the nervous system, normal protein synthesis, the reduction of tiredness and fatigue, and electrolyte balance.
- Vitamin D also contributes to the normal function of the immune system.
Nothing here is intended to diagnose, prevent, treat or cure any condition, and a food supplement is not a substitute for a varied and balanced diet or a healthy lifestyle.
Why the three together
Calcium is needed for the maintenance of normal bones, magnesium contributes to the maintenance of normal bones, and vitamin D contributes to the normal absorption and utilisation of calcium. Putting all three in one tablet is simply more convenient than taking them separately.
How to take it
Three tablets a day, with a glass of water. Do not exceed the recommended daily dose. Store somewhere cool and dry, out of reach of children.
180 tablets at three a day is a two-month supply, about 37p a day at £22.00.
Suitability and allergens
No allergens are declared on the UK ingredient list. One point for vegans: the vitamin D here is vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol), which is normally derived from lanolin (sheep’s wool). That makes it acceptable to most vegetarians but not suitable for vegans — if you need a vegan vitamin D, NeoLife’s Vegan D uses D3 from lichen instead. There are no artificial colours, flavours or sweeteners.
Calcium and magnesium supplements can interact with the absorption of some medicines (including certain antibiotics and thyroid medication). If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, taking prescribed medication or under medical care, speak to your GP or pharmacist before starting any new supplement.
Full ingredients
Calcium carbonate, magnesium hydroxide, bulking agent: microcrystalline cellulose; stabiliser: cross-linked sodium carboxymethyl cellulose; anti-caking agents: fatty acids, calcium salts of fatty acids, silicon dioxide; vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol).
What to compare when buying a calcium/magnesium supplement
| What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Is vitamin D included? | Vitamin D contributes to the normal absorption and utilisation of calcium. This one includes D3 at 100% NRV.1 |
| Elemental amounts and %NRV1 | Compare the calcium, magnesium and vitamin D figures with their %NRV — here 56%, 60% and 100% per serving — not the weight of the compound.1 |
| Calcium-to-magnesium ratio | This is 2:1 (450 mg to 225 mg), a common and sensible pairing.1 |
| D2 or D3, and the D3 source | D3 (cholecalciferol) is the form used here. Standard D3 is from lanolin, so not vegan; a vegan product uses lichen D3 or D2. |
| Cost per day | Three tablets a day — about 37p a day here, which is good value. |
